When Rayona sings, you don’t just hear Afrobeat you feel survival turned symphony. Her music pulses with a rare alchemy: inherited pressures, private fears, and firstborn burdens reforged into rhythms so potent, they rewire your pulse. Press play on Craze, her debut anthem, and witness resilience distilled into sound a testament to her power to turn “blood, sweat, and pain” into communal catharsis.

The Spark in the Shadows

Before the we heard Craze, before Afrobeat fused with pop in her veins she was a girl, But how does quiet become thunder? Rewind to Jos, Nigeria, a girl named Gift who absorbing saxophone echoes in her father’s music academy. Melodies lived in her bones, Rayona’s sound was born: raw, hungry, and destined to fuse Yoruba roots with the weight of her truth. But Rayona’s joy wasn’t found it was forged. In the unlikeliest of places  a humble staircase a cousin’s voice cracked open her silence. What emerged wasn’t imitation, but a sound raw enough to carry the weight of firstborn expectations, disciplined enough to blend classical training with poetic fire.

Rayona, originally named Gift Motunrayo Oyelusi, is a 19 year-old singer-songwriter from Lagos Nigeria, she crafts music that seamlessly fuses Afrobeats, R&B, and pop, yielding a sound that resonates deeply with personal experiences and global audiences.

With a voice that echoes the struggles, thriving and triumphs of a generation, Rayona’s music embodies the essence of Afrobeats, R&B, and pop, masterfully woven together to convey the complexities of life and love. Rayona, pens songs that traverse the spectrum of human emotion, from the depths of struggle and survival to the heights of love and self-discovery.

Rayona has carefully built an artistic identity that holds deep meaning, going far beyond just the sound of her chosen stage name. Her given Yoruba name, “Motunrayo,” means “I have found joy again.” This name became the foundation for her creative identity. Playfully and purposefully, she took “Rayo” from her birth name and naturally added “na,” creating “Rayona.”This name sounds musical and captures her lively spirit and artistic heart. “I wanted something that really captured me my vibe, and the kind of artist I’m becoming,” she explains clearly.

At first, she considered other names like “Gift” or the stylized “Ghyft.” But her search for something unique led her to this perfect blend. “Once I put it together as Rayona it just clicked. It became more than a name; it became a part of my identity as an artist.” Choosing this name wasn’t just rebranding; it was a powerful statement about her changing self within music.

Her story starts in the beautiful town of Jos, in Nigeria’s Plateau State. This place is known for its rich culture and lively music traditions. For Rayona, music wasn’t just fun; it was a key part of her family history. She grew up in a home filled with sounds and rhythms. Her father was a skilled saxophonist, pianist, and ran a local music school. He surrounded her with a rich world of music from her earliest days. His love for melody was catching. He carefully developed her talents, teaching her about instruments and how to arrange music. “My dad plays beautifully, and he writes music, which always fascinated me growing up,” she remembers with clear admiration. From the piano and flute to the guitar, and now the violin, her skills grew under his teaching. “Even before I fully discovered my voice, melodies were constantly around me. Over time, they started to live in me.” This early immersion didn’t just build her technical skill; it also created a deep emotional connection to the art form that defines her.

The spark of musical passion, first lit by her father, was gently nurtured into a strong flame by her cousin, a gifted singer whose guidance changed everything. Their bond went beyond family, growing into a deep artistic partnership. Through casual sessions on their home staircase their unusual practice spot her cousin uncovered Rayona’s hidden singing talent. She patiently taught her the skill of runs and riffs. “Her voice flowed so effortlessly, and I remember thinking, I want to do that,” she recalls, her voice full of nostalgia. These moments marked her vocal discovery “That was when I felt it for the first time: This is what I want to do.” Inspired by this, she immersed herself in the music of great singers like Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, and Ariana Grande.

Their vocal tones matched her own. “I got obsessed with learning her techniques and whistle notes,” she admits. She credits her musical awakening to these three key influences: her father’s basic training, her cousin’s vocal lessons, and her own growing determination.

Rayona’s musical path wasn’t traditional. She avoided formal classrooms for a challenging, self-directed journey to mastery. With strong commitment, she began a constant search to improve herself. She refined her art through endless practice and bold experimentation. “My musical background is rooted in practice, discipline, and pure determination,” she states firmly. Alongside this hard work was a deep love for literature, a gift from her mother. As an avid reader and writer, Rayona wove her passion for poetry and storytelling into her songwriting. This gave her work rich lyrics and emotional depth. “I used to write poems and books storytelling was a big part of my life. That love came from my mum,” she shares, highlighting her mother’s influence. Mixing musical and literary skills gave her songs a storytelling quality beyond just sound, pulling listeners into her experiences. “That combination helped me build a sound that’s not just heard, but felt.”

Creating her unique style was a changing journey. It involved consciously moving away from copying others towards raw honesty. Early on, she leaned heavily on famous singers’ techniques, studying their methods closely. But she soon realized true artistry meant embracing her own voice. “I always knew I didn’t want to just sound like someone else. I wanted to sound like me,” she declares with clear intent. This realization pushed her to explore new creative areas bravely. She wrote songs constantly across different styles and used feedback as a key tool for improvement. Her sound is a bright mix, combining Afrobeat’s driving rhythms with the wide appeal of global pop. This blend honors her Nigerian roots and shows her ambition to reach an international audience. “Growing up in Nigeria, I realized I had to embrace Afrobeat to connect with my people, but I pull inspiration from everywhere Spanish music, R&B, anything that challenges me creatively,” she explains. Her approach shows her varied influences and worldwide vision.

However, her path faced big challenges. She struggled with natural shyness and ongoing self-doubt. These inner enemies often threatened her freedom to express herself, forcing her to bravely face her fears. “I tend to care a lot about what people think. I overthink, I doubt myself sometimes,” she admits openly. Through inner strength and steady persistence, she built resilience to overcome these hurdles. She emerged with a stronger sense of identity and a clearer artistic purpose. “I’m learning to give myself grace. I’m stronger, bolder, and more sure of my purpose now,” she reflects. At the heart of her creativity is deep emotional honesty. She turns her personal highs and lows into songs that connect universally. “I make music to feel something, and to help others feel it too,” she explains. This philosophy shines clearly in her first release, Craze.

The debut single of the year Craze is a raw, thoughtful look at her role as the firstborn. This position carries unspoken expectations and social pressures. In many cultures, the oldest child is expected to uphold family honor and provide constant support a role with both privilege and weight. “There’s this pressure to be strong, to carry everyone,” she shares, her words deeply sincere. Through Craze, Rayona gives voice to this complex experience, offering comfort to others with similar burdens. Making the track combined studio spontaneity and careful thought, resulting in a song celebrating resilience and truth. “I wrote the first verse and chorus early on, then finished the second verse in the studio when the energy hit,” she recounts, showing her intuitive process. The title “Craze” tells a layered story. It captures both the chaotic noise of life and the inner strength needed to endure it. “It’s the pressure, the noise, the madness of life and the fact that you’re still standing, still sane,” she explains. She frames the song as a powerful statement about enduring life’s chaos.

Releasing Craze was a major moment in her artistic journey a brave leap filled with both fear and excitement. “It was scary but beautiful,” she reflects, capturing the two sides of the experience. She openly acknowledges the anxiety that came with this debut but celebrates the incredible courage it took to share her soul with the world. She focused more on emotional connection than on numbers or charts. “I just wanted people to receive the song well and connect with the message,” she shares. The response went beyond her highest hopes. An outpouring of love and support deeply touched her. “The love and support I’ve received has been more than I expected way more and I’m so grateful,” she expresses, her thanks clear. This wave of positive feedback confirmed her creative choices and strengthened her resolve to continue her musical path.

Just weeks after her first debut of the year, Rayona released a powerful new single, “Testimony,” a deeply personal and emotional follow-up to her debut hit “Craze.”

With raw, unwavering vocals, she sings about survival and healing, declaring “I won’t fall again, I will love again.” This song showcases Rayona’s bold storytelling and vulnerability, cementing her position as a fearless female voice in music. By blending Afrobeats, pop, and R&B, “Testimony” proves Rayona is here to stay, evolve, and inspire. At just 19, she’s making waves with her authentic and emotional music, and “Testimony” might be her most impactful work yet.

Through her art, Rayona aims to create a safe space for emotional discovery. She wants listeners to freely face and accept their deepest feelings. “I want my music to remind people that it’s okay to feel. Your feelings are valid,” she states with genuine conviction. By validating a wide range of emotions from sadness to joy she builds a shared space of understanding. She reassures her audience that their experiences matter universally. “There’s a reason your body, your spirit, your gut is reacting the way it is. That’s not weakness it’s being human,” she stresses. Her words urge people to honor their humanity.

Beyond her main music, Rayona has impressive talents in opera singing and creating songs without words. “I sing opera and classical music,” she reveals, showing a surprising breadth to her artistry. These pursuits highlight her vocal skill and add diverse influences to her work. Her love for drawing and reading also feeds her creativity, offering more sources of inspiration. “I haven’t fully tapped into that side publicly yet, but I’d love to share more one day,” she hints, suggesting future projects.

They carry such raw energy and depth,” she teases, creating anticipation for what’s coming.

With endless creativity, Rayona stands ready for a bold artistic rise. She promises a flow of new releases that will further define her sound. “Expect more singles, more sounds, and just more of me,” she pledges, her exciting preview showing her commitment to constant growth. While keeping details private, she hints at future collaborations and surprises. “Things are in motion. Stay tuned,” she invites, her words full of possibility.

Her debut marks a key chapter in her growth as both a person and an artist. “It reflects where I’ve been, what I’ve learned, and the artist I’m becoming,” she thinks. To new artists, she offers advice from her own path: “Don’t compare yourself to anyone else. Focus on your growth, keep working, and trust the process.” This guidance, based on her experience, inspires perseverance and authenticity through challenges.

As Rayona’s journey continues, her music stands as proof of her deep commitment to growth and self-discovery. Every note and lyric is part of her unfolding story. She invites listeners to join her on a transforming trip that weaves personal change with artistic expression. “It’s all about growth,” she concludes, welcoming others to walk this path with her one melody, one story at a time. With each new creation, she renews her promise to authenticity and emotional depth, ensuring her audience stays both engaged and uplifted.
